She needed some air.

Gina had barely backed out of the driveway before Corrine was showering, throwing on some clothes, and hopping into her own car. Hopefully, a little drive would clear her mind because right now it was too cluttered to even think logically. She shouldn’t have been trying to ignore those intrusive thoughts of her mother and her cancer. But still, Corrine found herself taking the expressway on-ramp, headed in the opposite direction of Paula’s house.

She recognized the first few prickles of guilt at her actions, but she tried to ignore that as well. She would eventually muster the courage, and the patience, to go see Paula. Just not today. Gina would have to accept that she and Corrine weren’t built the same. They dealt with hurt differently. And, hell, not even Gina would ever know the depths of trauma their parents had put Corrine through. She would face her demons when she was ready. She just hoped, for Paula’s sake, the woman lived long enough to confront them with her.

Corrine didn’t have any particular destination in mind, but she found herself navigating toward Pat’s auto shop. Since he wasn’t answering his phone to confirm, Corrine could only assume he was working today.

Sure enough, his truck was parked in front of the building, along with a few others. The garage doors were up and music was blaring from inside, though no one was in sight.

Corrine parked and made her way to one of the garage entrances with a Chevy Impala elevated in the air on a vertical lift. For the briefest of moments, Corrine wondered if Kalem was working today. Then, as if someone had read her mind, she quickly dispelled the thought.

Kalem was Pat’s right hand when it came to running the business side of things. He had the stereotypical thug demeanor, with felony convictions, a drug-dealing rap sheet, and a bitter, boujie baby mama whom Corrine had seen strutting around the garage a time or two. But even with all of that, plus zero experience to his name, Pat had brought him onboard and groomed the young man into his protégé. Now, Kalem could manage the shop like it was his own, and Corrine knew Pat trusted him with everything, from the finances to the equipment.

Speaking of which, Corrine stopped short when she saw Kalem come strolling from one of the outside storages, rubbing his hands on an oil-stained cloth. He was easily a couple feet under Corrine, but what he lacked in height, he made up for in muscle. Plus, with his chocolate complexion and short locs, not to mention the scar along his jawline, he was still a little intimidating.

Kalem didn’t bother speaking, barely sparing Corrine an absent glance when he noticed her standing there in the garage. The sleeves of his jumpsuit were rolled up to the elbow to reveal a tapestry of tattoos etched in his skin. A blunt was clamped between his lips.

He continued working on the Impala, making it obvious he wasn’t going to address her, before she spoke up.
